After hiring an 18-lawyer capital markets team from Kilpatrick Stockton, Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal has opened an office in Charlotte, NC. John Suhr, Jonathan Nugent and James Tucker all joined Sonnenschein as partners, along with counsels Linde Carley and Keith Jones, and 13 associates. The partners, who will be heading Sonnenschein’s capital markets practice, specialize in commercial real estate finance and equity investment by traditional and capital markets lenders. Sonnenschein has been expanding recently, having announced in March plans to open in Silicon Valley; the firm also intends to open in Dallas.

Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo has expanded both its San Diego and Palo Alto, CA offices. Former Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney attorneys Daniel T. Pascucci and Andrew D. Skale, an intellectual property litigator, have joined Mintz Levin’s San Diego office as Members. Two associates from Buchanan are also joining the San Diego office. Corporate attorneys Matt Kirmayer and Jason Altieri, formerly of Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, will be working in Palo Alto. Joining those two in Palo Alto are two associates from Bozicevic, Field & Francis. With the new additions, Mintz Levin’s San Diego office has tripled in size to 22 attorneys since opening nine months ago; the Palo Alto office, which opened last year, has doubled in size to 11 lawyers. With the departure of the global IP head and last remaining Palo Alto partner, Daniel Harris, Clifford Chance’s California operations are officially closed. Though the original plan was for Harris to move his IP practice to the Washington office after the closure of the Palo Alto office, he decided to stay in CA, leaving the firm altogether. In 2002, Clifford Chance had four offices on the West Coast; by 2002, however, Harris was the only attorney left. The firm has not announced a successor for Harris yet.

Nixon Peabody announced this week the opening of their new Palo Alto, CA office. Five lawyers from the Silicon Valley Law Group opened the office, and will be later joined by Nixon Peabody attorneys from San Francisco. The Silicon Valley group was led by corporate partner James Chapman, who claims to bring a business worth up to $2 million. Nixon Peabody has 622 lawyers nationwide.

Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal plans to open two more offices after the opening of its Menlo Park office in March. The Chicago-firm will open an office in Dallas this month, and by the end of March will have another somewhere in southeastern U.S. Sonnenschein currently has 10 U.S. offices and one in Brussels. The firm is positioned for growth and wants to have more than 1,000 attorneys to increase profits and attract new talent; lateral hiring of lawyers from other firms is the firm’s strategy for increasing its numbers.
