Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to welcome back Timothy A. Gustafson as a partner in the State and Local Tax (SALT) Practice. Based in Sacramento, Mr. Gustafson will be an integral part of Eversheds Sutherland’s anticipated growth in California, particularly in the areas of state and local tax controversy and litigation. Mr. Gustafson previously practiced at Eversheds Sutherland from 2012 to 2018 and rejoins the firm from Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP.

Recognized as a leading SALT practitioner in California by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, Mr. Gustafson counsels clients on all aspects of state and local tax controversy, including audits, administrative appeals and litigation. He is extensively experienced on issues and matters before the California Franchise Tax Board and the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. He has also argued cases at the Oregon Supreme Court and in other states.

Mr. Gustafson previously served in the US Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps at the Netherlands Law Center for three years. His duties included representing the United States in military courts-martial and advising the local command on numerous legal issues.

Mr. Gustafson is a frequent author and speaker on matters related to state and local tax. He is a member of the respective tax sections of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of California and the Sacramento County Bar Association. He is a recipient of the State Bar of California’s Wiley W. Manual Award for Pro Bono Legal Services.
