Continuing the expansion of its highly-regarded Intellectual Property Practice and life sciences capabilities, Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. announced that Terri Shieh-Newton has joined the firm as a Member. She will be based in the firm’s San Francisco office. Dr. Shieh-Newton was most recently the co-chair of the stem cell and regenerative medicine practice at Morrison & Foerster. The news comes on the heels of the recent addition of a trio of IP attorneys with extensive medical technology experience to the firm’s Boston office.

Dr. Shieh-Newton, who holds a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Medicine from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, works with a range of life sciences clients focused on areas including stem cells, regenerative medicine, immunology, antibodies, cancer immunotherapy, virologyvaccines and adjuvants, diagnostics, and assays for personalized treatment of cancer, immunological diseases such as HIV, autoimmune diseases, and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, Dr. Shieh-Newton works with clean technology clients on matters relating to biofuels, microbial engineering, industrial fermentation, enzymes, enzymatic engineering, and production of target chemical using biological processes.

Dr. Shieh-Newton has significant experience in a wide range of life science areas and clean technology that allows her to provide creative solutions and render practical legal advice to her clients. Her practice focuses on strategic patent counseling, comprehensive portfolio management, construction of valuable portfolios, preparation and prosecution of patent applications, interferences, reissues, and reexaminations in the life sciences and clean technology sectors. She manages and conducts due diligence for both private and public companies and investors. In addition, her practice includes assessing freedom-to-operate and rendering patentability and invalidity opinions. She has extensive experience in evaluating patent landscapes to advise clients seeking to enter competitive markets, as well as advising clients on third party challenges and risk mitigation strategies. Furthermore, she has experience working on biotechnology patent litigation.

In addition to her Ph.D., Dr. Shieh-Newton holds a B.A. in Biochemistry from Rice University and a J.D. from Santa Clara Law School. She is licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
