Jill Haley Penwarden, a top litigator for the sports and recreation industry, has joined international law firm Rimon Law in its Entertainment / Sports and Recreation Practice Group. Ms. Penwarden will be a Partner in the firm’s newly-opened Lake Tahoe office.

Ms. Penwarden has decades of experience handling litigation for a variety of recreation providers, including ski areas, golf course operators, mountain bike parks and cruise ship operators. Her work includes handling trials and appeals in both the federal and state courts, in addition to arbitration, mediation, and providing risk management counseling and advice. She regularly handles cutting edge assumption of risk cases arising from sports and recreational injuries and claims.

Among Ms. Penwarden’s noteworthy victories include a defense jury verdict for a ski area in a catastrophic injury case, named one of the “Top 10 Defense Verdicts” of the year by the Los Angeles Daily Journal. Ms. Penwarden is often able to obtain summary judgment orders for her clients, in which the court dismisses the lawsuit prior to trial based on the doctrine of assumed risk. She has also successfully preserved these victories on appeal. When assumption of risk issues have come before the California Supreme Court, Ms. Penwarden has drafted “friend of the court” briefs on the law of assumption of risk to advise the court of the potential impact of its decision on recreational providers. She keeps up with current trends in multiple recreational industries in order to best advise her clients on their risks and how best to avoid litigation.

Rimon Law, which has 15 offices internationally, has twice been recognized by the Financial Times as one of the North America’s most innovative law firms. Rimon’s Managing Partners were both named “Legal Rebels” by the American Bar Association’s ABA Journal. The firm’s highly experienced litigators have experience handling the most complex litigations. Rimon also offers full service teams of highly-experienced attorneys handling corporate, intellectual property, tax and private client work.

“Jill has a powerful reputation as a leader in an ever-changing and frequently high pressure field – representing recreation providers in bet-the-company litigation. She has succeeded in a growing area of law, especially since recreation providers are expanding operations throughout the country. We are thrilled to have Jill aboard,” said Michael Moradzadeh, Rimon Law’s CEO.

“Rimon has developed a name as an excellent firm for litigators to expand their practices and be able to work cooperatively with fellow high-level attorneys. I was attracted to the efficient, interdisciplinary approach that the firm takes to law practice, and the opportunity to collaborate with attorneys in related areas. I look forward to expanding my business at Rimon,” said Ms. Penwarden.

Ms. Penwarden received her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law, and her B.A. from the University of California, San Diego.
