Troutman Sanders LLP announced today that Ronald I. He joins the firm from Faruki Ireland & Cox P.L.L, where he led the Technology Litigation and Information Compliance practice.

“We are very pleased to add Ron’s strong leadership to our Cybersecurity, Information Governance and Privacy practice,” said Becky Ross, a Chair of the Litigation Department. “He has been involved in the full spectrum of issues, from developing practices and policies that proactively address privacy and data security issues, to guiding companies through all aspects of their response once a data breach happens. His diverse and considerable experience with individual and class action litigation, compliance and regulatory issues, will be of great benefit to clients in this very challenging environment.”

Raether handles issues at the intersection of business and information technology. He has significant experience in the areas of consumer financial services, federal and state privacy statutes, cyber risk, data security, data breaches, background screening, credit reporting and information governance. He has been involved in seminal litigation addressing compliance with statutes that regulate the use and disclosure of personal information and laws that concern the adequacy of securing against unauthorized access of sensitive data.

Raether has served as national counsel for data aggregators, consumer reporting agencies and other businesses, defending over 50 putative class actions and hundreds of individual privacy cases in more than 30 different states. He also has significant experience representing companies in regulatory investigations, including before the Federal Trade Commission, Office for Civil Rights, and state Attorneys General. Raether speaks regularly and is widely published on topics in areas including privacy, information security, data breach response, and consumer financial services.

“Ron has developed a national reputation for his considerable work over the past two decades helping clients to protect their data, to comply with the growing body of state and federal regulatory statutes and to respond when there is litigation or unauthorized access of their data,” said Larry Cerutti, managing partner of the firm’s Orange County office. “In addition, his deep experience handling regulatory investigations, background screening and class action litigation in the consumer financial services area, including in California, where there has been considerable enforcement activity, will further expand our national Financial Services Litigation practice.”

Raether is a member of the state bars of Ohio and California. He received his B.A., cum laude, from Ohio State University and his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Dayton.

“I am very excited to be joining Troutman Sanders and to contribute to the growth of the firm’s practices in the areas of Cybersecurity, Information Governance and Privacy, and Financial Services Litigation,” said Raether. “The established multi-disciplinary business and legal experience that the firm offers provides a strong platform for expanding my practice and providing clients with creative and effective solutions.”
