The global law firm Jones Day welcomes Beong-Soo Kim as a partner in its Issues & Appeals Practice, resident in its Los Angeles Office.

Mr. Kim comes to Jones Day from the United States Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles, where he was most recently chief of the major frauds section in the criminal division, a position he served in for two and a half years.

“Beong is a highly accomplished trial and appellate lawyer, with substantive experience in cases involving securities law, financial institutions, health care, trade secret theft, money laundering, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and a wide variety of other matters,” saidChris Lovrien, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Los Angeles Office. “His experience as a prosecutor, combined with his prior experience as a commercial litigator, will be extremely valuable to our global clients and especially strengthens our capabilities here in L.A.”

Mr. Kim joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2003.  He was promoted to deputy chief of the major frauds section in 2007, and to chief of the major frauds section (one of the youngest individuals ever to hold that position) in early 2010. In his most recent role, he led the largest federal white-collar section in the country (approximately 36 prosecutors), directing complex and high-profile investigations and prosecutions involving major criminal fraud allegations. In addition to trying 20 jury trials, he drafted and filed dozens of appellate briefs and delivered 18 oral arguments – both as appellee and appellant – before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, he was a litigation associate at Munger, Tolles & Olson, where he handled a wide variety of complex commercial litigation matters at both the trial and appellate levels, and argued multiple times before the Ninth Circuit.

Mr. Kim earned his undergraduate degree in social studies from Harvard College, his master of science degree in political theory from the London School of Economics, and his law degree from Harvard Law School. He is a frequent lecturer at professional conferences, has published in legal publications, and has taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California School of Law.

With the arrival of Mr. Kim, Jones Day’s Los Angeles Office now has 91 attorneys including 37 partners.
