Foley announced today that Marc T. Morley has joined the firm’s Intellectual Property Department and Chemical, Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Practice as a partner in the San Diego/Del Mar office.

Morley’s practice focuses on representing technology companies, universities, research institutions and individuals in diverse intellectual property matters. He obtains and manages patent portfolios for a wide variety of technologies, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, clean technology, industrial and agricultural biotechnology, chemical, biology, software and computer systems. Morley also counsels clients on IP licensing and due diligence matters.

“Marc’s impressive technical background is an ideal fit for our intellectual property team, as clients looking to protect their technological developments and maximize business opportunities require deep industry knowledge from their legal counsel,” said Pavan Agarwal, chair of Foley’s Intellectual Property Department. “He will be a crucial resource for our clients in navigating intellectual property matters in a complex and competitive marketplace.”

Morley joined Foley from the San Diego office of Knobbe Martens Olsen & Bear. Prior to that, he was a development associate at biopharmaceutical company Scios Inc., where he was involved in the optimization of recombinant protein expression systems, protein purification and recovery methods, process scale-up and process computer automation.

“We are excited for Marc to join our thriving intellectual property group in San Diego/Del Mar,” said Van Tengberg, managing partner of Foley’s San Diego/Del Mar office. “His wealth of experience, both in providing legal counsel on IP matters and in biopharmaceutical development, will be invaluable to our clients on the west coast and nationally.”

Morley is an adjunct professor teaching patent law for the University of San Diego School of Law and teaches a course on biotechnology and pharmaceutical patent law at the University of California San Diego.

“Marc brings deep expertise and experience, particularly in biotechnology and pharmaceutical matters, to our local life science IP team,” said Gerald Swiss, a senior life science IP partner in the San Diego/Del Mar office. “His addition enhances Foley’s already strong position in these areas, and we are delighted to have him join us.”

“We are pleased to have a person of Marc’s caliber join us. His life science skills and expertise complement our highly regarded IP litigation practice both locally and nationally,” said Joe Patiño, a senior IP litigation partner in the San Diego/Del Mar office. “Marc’s breadth of expertise will augment our local IP life science practice and will provide an even stronger platform to expand our litigation focus.”
