John J. Rice, a former federal prosecutor and an experienced white collar and securities litigator, has joined Ballard Spahr’s San Diego office as of counsel.

Mr. Rice is a member of Ballard Spahr’s Litigation Department and the Securities Litigation and White Collar/Investigations Groups. His practice is focused on white collar criminal defense and complex securities litigation.

“John is a great addition to our team,” said Henry E. Hockeimer, Jr., Practice Leader of Ballard Spahr’s White Collar/Investigations Group. “His distinguished background as a federal prosecutor dovetails nicely with the federal agency experience many of our other lawyers have, giving the team special insight into how government regulators operate.”

Mr. Rice, who joins Ballard Spahr from Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd in San Diego, spent more than 15 years with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, most recently as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of California specializing in public corruption cases. In 2005, he was part of the trial team that obtained guilty verdicts against several elected public officials, including a San Diego city councilman and a former Las Vegas county commissioner.

“John’s arrival strengthens Ballard Spahr’s litigation capabilities in the West, particularly in San Diego, where he joins our formidable team of white collar litigators,” said Thomas W. McNamara, Managing Partner of the firm’s San Diego office.

Ballard Spahr also has western offices in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver, and Salt Lake City.

“I am excited to be joining Ballard Spahr’s exceptional white collar attorneys,” Mr. Rice said. “I am looking forward to working with my new colleagues in San Diego and throughout the West.”
