McDermott Will & Emery announced today that Erika Mayshar has joined the firm as a partner and will split time between the Los Angeles and Orange County offices. Ms. Mayshar will use her background as a tax lawyer to practice at the intersection of McDermott’s core practice areas of Tax, Health and Private Client. She will be a member of the Health Practice Group with a focus on tax-exempt representation of entities within the health care industry.

Ms. Mayshar’s practice includes transactional tax planning for tax-exempt organizations and other business entities. With a significant focus on the health care industry, she advises hospitals, medical foundations, trade associations, charitable and religious organizations, advocacy organizations, and private foundations. Ms. Mayshar also counsels clients regarding the daily complexities of operating tax-exempt organizations and provides structuring advice for healthcare organizations and other nonprofits entering into joint ventures, affiliations, and similar strategic transactions. Ms. Mayshar will work closely with McDermott health partner Robert C. Louthian whose practice also intersects with a wide range of exempt entities such as hospitals and other institutional advisers, private foundations, scientific research organizations, universities, trade associations and corporate foundations.

“Erika is an important addition to our practice,” said Stephen Bernstein, global head of McDermott’s Health Practice Group. “Tax-exempt entities face unique and complex requirements, and as a highly accomplished tax lawyer, Erika will play a key role in helping us meet the needs of this rapidly expanding client base at the intersection of the health and tax arenas.”

Ms. Mayshar joins Alexander M. Lee and Alejandro Ruiz both of whom recently joined the Firm as partners in the Tax Practice Group in the Los Angeles and Silicon Valley offices respectively. The addition of these highly skilled tax lawyers further enhances the strength of McDermott’s transactional tax capabilities on the West Coast and across the Firm’s global platform. “Erika will build upon the West Coast momentum sparked by the recent arrivals of Alex and Alejandro,” said Lowell D. Yoder, global head of McDermott’s Tax Practice Group. “She and the other new arrivals to our California offices will enhance the work already being done by other tax partners like Dan Zucker in Chicago, and will increase our client capabilities from coast to coast and around the world.”

Ms. Mayshar will similarly team with our Private Client lawyers, including Julie Kwon and Nicole Pearl of our Silicon Valley and Los Angeles Offices, to advise clients on private foundation and related matters. “Providing tax-exempt counseling for private foundations and other wealth management planning, Erika will be an important resource for our private client team serving high net worth clients, especially those on the West Coast,” said Carol Harrington, global head of McDermott’s Private Client Practice. “Our clients include affluent individuals and families, family offices, fiduciaries, private trust companies, and public and private charities who will benefit from Erika’s extensive knowledge and experience with tax-exempt matters.”

Ms. Mayshar currently serves as an advisory board member of the Center for Investment and Wealth Management at the University of California Paul Merage School of Business. She provides pro bono counseling to various tax-exempt organizations, including United Way and Irvine Public Schools Foundation.

Ms. Mayshar received a BA magna cum laude from Pomona College and a JD from Stanford Law School where she was an editor of the Stanford Law & Business Journal.
