Morris Polich & Purdy LLP is pleased to announce that Timothy J. Toohey joined the firm as a partner on November 1, 2013. A US and EU Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US and CIPP/EU), Tim is a graduate of Stanford University, Harvard University and UC Berkeley School of Law. Additionally, Tim attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. His practice is concentrated on data protection and privacy matters, complex litigation and intellectual property. An authority in the field, Tim has authored the timely book in the cyber arena Understanding Privacy & Data Protection – What You Need to Know with Thomson Reuters/Aspatore (2014). The book provides a succinct and fundamental study, offering key guidance regarding the many existing domestic and international laws while addressing technological developments that impact privacy and data security. Bringing a wealth of experience to the firm, Tim has assumed the leadership of the firm’s established cyber, privacy & data security team.

Tim has handled a wide range of privacy and data breach matters, including advice regarding the Federal Credit Reporting Act, Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Electronic Communications Privacy Act, and the US/EU Safe Harbor. He has handled matters relating to cloud computing, and the privacy and security implications of “smart” devices and social media. He has also advised clients regarding California’s Song-Beverly Act, California Security Breach Notice requirements and international privacy and security issues, including compliance with European Union (E.U.) data protection and privacy directives.
