The Firm advised USJ Co., Ltd. on its negotiation of a long term license to construct and operate the “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” theme park within Universal Studios Japan from Warner Bros. Consumer Products Inc. The theme park attraction will feature similar rides, venues and themes as the existing theme park within Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando, which is credited with significantly increasing attendance and revenues at Universal Orlando. The “Wizarding World of Harry Potter” theme park at Universal Studios Japan is scheduled to open in late 2014. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The Simpson Thacher team for the transaction included Daniel Clivner, Vijay Sekhon and Ravi Purushotham (Corporate); Lori Lesser (Intellectual Property) and Morris Massel (Bankruptcy).
