The global law firm Jones Day has announced that Shireen Becker has joined the Firm’s San Diego Office as of counsel in the Corporate Criminal Investigations Practice. Ms. Becker joins from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, where she served as Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division.

“Shireen is a fantastic addition to our practice here in San Diego,” said Karen Hewitt, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s San Diego Office and a former United States Attorney for the Southern District of California. “She has substantial experience in government investigations and prosecutions in a variety of areas of the law and her deep focus in Health Care will be of tremendous value to our clients in San Diego and throughout the U.S.”

During her time at the United States Attorney’s office, Ms. Becker served as the Criminal Health Care Fraud Coordinator for the Southern District of California, prosecuting health care fraud cases, violations of the Anti-Kickback Statute, criminal false claims and false statements, procurement fraud, tax fraud, and aggravated identity theft. She also spent some of her tenure in the General Crimes Section prosecuting immigration, drug-trafficking, alien smuggling, firearms-trafficking, passport fraud, bulk cash smuggling, and bank robbery offenses.

Ms. Becker is a graduate of Duke University School of Law and earned her undergraduate degree from Georgetown University. She was a law clerk to the Honorable Irma E. Gonzalez, U.S. District Court Judge, San Diego, California. Ms. Becker is admitted to the State Bar of California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. District Court, Southern District of California.
