Erik Edwards, a former Cooley business partner who left in 2011 to serve as General Counsel and later as the Managing Director of the family office of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, has re-joined Cooley as a partner in its business department.
Edwards, who first joined Cooley as a summer associate in 1999, and became a partner in 2009, will reside in the firm’s Palo Alto office where he will re-establish a practice focused on the representation of emerging growth companies, investors and public companies on a wide range of matters including financings, mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance matters. Sidley Austin LLP announced today that Steven S. Baik has joined the firm as a partner in Palo Alto and will be a member of the Intellectual Property Litigation practice. Prior to joining Sidley, Mr. Baik was partner in a global law firm based in Palo Alto, where he was a trial lawyer focused on intellectual property litigation.
A highly experienced litigator, Mr. Baik has litigated cases that involved a wide range of technologies, including semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing, power electronics, software, wired and Wi-Fi networking devices, and semiconductor memory technologies. In addition, Mr. Baik has significant experience in intellectual property licensing and has negotiated patent and intellectual property licenses on behalf of several prominent international companies, including corporations based in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Europe. Prior to joining Rimon, Mr. Smith was a partner at several prominent firms, including IP boutique firm Limbach & Limbach. He most recently served as the first Administrative Patent Judge on the Patent Trial and Appeal Board for the US Patent & Trademark Office’s Silicon Valley Satellite Office. The PTAB handles appeals within the Patent Office and a host of post-grant patent proceedings, Post Grant Reviews, and Business Method Patent challenges, which are increasingly important in patent enforcement and defense strategy.
