Nossaman LLP has expanded its statewide Coastal Law practice with the addition of Steven Kaufmann as a Partner in its Los Angeles office. He joins from Richards, Watson & Gershon, where he practiced coastal law following 14 years as Deputy Attorney General assigned to the Coastal Commission.

Mr. Kaufmann has represented developers, public agencies and public utilities in a broad array of Coastal Commission matters, including LCP adoptions and amendments, Coastal Development Permit approvals and litigation matters covering every aspect of California coastal regulation.

Prior to working in private practice, Mr. Kaufmann served as California Deputy Attorney General assigned to the Coastal Commission and several other state environmental regulatory agencies from 1977 to 1991.

Nossaman’s existing coastal law group includes some of California’s most experienced coastal lawyers and consultants, including Partners John Erskine and John Flynn in Orange County/San Diego, Greg Sanders in the Central Coast/Monterey area, and Senior Policy Advisor Bonnie Neely, a 12-year member and Chair of the California Coastal Commission, who is based in Northern California.

Mr. Erskine commented that “Steve’s unparalleled knowledge of the Coastal Act, its regulations, policies and procedures, and extensive litigation experience will strengthen our team and add tremendous value for our clients.”

Mr. Kaufmann states, “Nossaman’s leading coastal law practice and group of outstanding Environment and Land Use lawyers is known throughout California and nationally; I’ve worked with a number of Nossaman partners over the years and have always been impressed with their legal competency and savvy approach to serving their clients, whether obtaining Coastal Commission approvals or handling complex land use litigation.”

Mr. Kaufmann is the latest addition to a full service and growing nationwide Environmental and Land Use practice chaired by Partner Paul Weiland, which recently added environmental lawyers to a new Seattle, Washington office (Linda Larson and Svend Brandt-Erichsen), Washington, D.C. (Steve Quarles), and Austin, Texas (Alan Glen). Senior Policy Advisor John Anderson also joined the firm’s consulting practice in Washington, D.C., in January 2017.
